Doesn’t the name of this band just scream pop-punk? Maybe that’s just me, but there’s a sense of existential dread attached to the band name Woke Up Older. At the same time, there’s something playful about it. I mean, come on, we all “Woke Up Older” today. It’s a fact. These two things create what I love about pop-punk. Playful energy but emotional words. Let’s see if Woke Up Older’s song “Last Rites” is, in fact, the pop-punk anthem I am expecting (and wanting).
Within the first few seconds, I knew this was everything and more than I could have ever asked for. Formed in 2019 out in California, Woke Up Older absolutely has that classic, anthemic pop-punk sound. It comes with a sharp tongue in the vein of bands like The Story So Far, but also has a bounciness like what you would get from Four Year Strong or even Simple Plan. As I suspected, there’s no shortage of fun and infectious energy behind “Last Rites,” but lyrically, this song goes a bit dark. It’s about how our actions now, as much fun as they may seem, can set a pretty bleak future ablaze. Talk about existential dread. I didn’t want to dwell on the message behind this song because, honestly, it was taking me to a darker place than I felt prepared to go today, but I enjoyed the crap out of “Last Rites” as a whole song multiple times before I felt able to move on with my day.
