I’m having a super frustrating morning. I’m motivated and ready to get a lot of things done this morning, so I can have a little break after work today and before my show tonight, but my computer is not cooperating. I am, apparently, on its schedule, and its schedule is basically whatever it wants to be. It’s moving slowly and, no matter how many times I restart it, she won’t go any faster. I’m frustrated but determined not to let it get the best of me, so instead of losing it and throwing this thing out the window, let’s take a breather and kick today off with “Twilight of Summer” from Lost in the City.
Everything about this song screams nostalgia. Sonically, this is pop-punk-perfect and definitely an ode to the golden era of pop-punk back in the early 2000s. Lyrically, this is a classic tale of, as the band puts it, “the fading glow of teenage summers”. Quintessential, perfect, and amazing– there’s no other way to describe this song. I feel like “Twilight of Summer” is perfect for today. We had our first giant cold snap here in Minneapolis last night. There was frost on the ground when I walked outside, and I could see my breath as I walked from my house to the garage. Summer is behind us, and it has everything feeling just a bit heavy, but also so beautiful and cozy. Although I’m ready for winter and all of the things it brings (which I love), this song was a reminder of how it felt when I was growing up and longed for summer to last forever, just adding to the nostalgia that Lost in the City has in their sound. Make sure to listen to this whole track because, right when you think you have Lost in the City figured out, they take you down a shockingly heavy path that you were never expecting which is the cherry on top to this perfect track.
