It has been far too long since I’ve seen Maria and the Coins live. It’s been since July of 2021 if you want to get specific about it. Sure, I’ve heard their music since that night, but there’s been something missing. I need their flawless energy that comes with a a Maria and the Coins show. Unfortunately, that’s not in the cards for me right now. My calendar is back through March at this point, with very little wiggle room, which means I will not be able to make it to Maria and the Coins’ show on December 11th at The Icehouse. I’m beyond bummed about it but have found a sense of solace by listening to their new single “Say It’s Over” again and again and again and again and… okay, you get it.

In true Maria and the Coins fashion, “Say It’s Over” is a catchy little bop, but it comes at you with this ferocious series of teeth made up of pure emotion and exposed grit. Yeah, it’s a fun track, but if you dig into the song a bit deeper, you hear the flashes of angst that Maria is able to hide in her voice. For the most part, her voice is like the voice of an angel, but there are some words that seem to show her teeth a little bit more than others, and that really drives the storyline of this song home. Her amazing band follows suit. They are light and seem to be only there to lift the vocals up, but every once in a while, you hear a certain note stand out or a certain drum hit just a little harder. These are all the little things that Maria and the Coins a band that refuses to be ignored, make “Say It’s Over” your new cozy and heartfelt anthem for fall.
