Girl at the Rock Shows

For someone who typically doesn’t like cover songs and rarely shares them with ya’ll, it’s a bit surprising that this is the second day in a row when I have one to share with you. Yesterday was the brilliant Queen cover done by Edelston & Dulcimer, and today is Cam Elise’s genius cover of System of a Down’s Toxicity. Much like the one yesterday, this cover from Cam Elise not only had me struck by the beauty, but also by the sheer creativity that it surely took to pull this cover song off.

I feel like it’s safe to assume that you’ve all heard “Toxicity” before, so I will spare you the intro section on that, but you surely haven’t heard it like this. “Toxicity” is full of power, angst, and rage. Cam Elise’s version is full of beauty, delicacy, and emotion. I’ll be honest, it took me a second to really fall in love with this, but as I followed Cam Elise’s voice singing the familiar words in an unfamiliar tone, I realized that I was feeling the same kind of strength, just in a different form. I love how this version of the song is almost lullaby-esque in a way, but don’t let that fool you into thinking you can sleep on this track. You will surely fall head over heels for Cam’s voice and creativity within the first couple of minutes of this track. Cam is only 17 years old. If this is any proof of what’s to come, I would be shocked if this is the last time you see Cam Elise’s name come across this blog.
