It is eerily foggy out here in Minneapolis today. It’s honestly a bit creepy, and it’s definitely setting the stage for what they are saying is going to be a pretty epic storm. While a lot of people seem to be nervous about the impending storm, I’m excited for it. I’m ready for snow. I’m ready for the cold. I’m ready. This has absolutely nothing to do with “Wicker Incident” from Self Torqu,e but I hope I have your attention enough to where you’ll check out this amazing single.
“Wicker Incident” is the second single from Self Torque’s debut LP, which is due out in January on Sugar-Free Records. Although the song starts off feeling a bit hollow, after about thirty seconds, you get to hear the power of this Brighton-based trio. It’s a fast and angsty song with these pop sensibilities behind it that make it one of those songs that instantly get stuck in your head. I’ve been on a bit of a Dillinger Four kick for the past hour or so, and I love how perfectly this single fits into that world. The vocals aren’t as gritty as bands like Dillinger Four, but they hit you with the same kind of emotion and heart. It’s a story of looking back and understanding how the events of your childhood have made you who you are today for better or for worse. I love that this song doesn’t quite pick a lane. There are moments that feel tender, but those are shadowed by moments of slight aggression, giving this song that perfect give and take of emotion and sound.
