I used to pretend to be a “Skateboard Kid.” I loved getting Skateboard magazines, cutting them up, and stapling them to my walls (sorry, Dad!). I obsessed over skate videos and movies like ‘Grind’, but really, I was more about the culture of it all than the actual boarding. Don’t get me wrong, I can ride a skateboard and still have a few in my garage for when I’m feeling spicy, but overall, I was never really a true “Skateboard Kid,” but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the crap out of this song from Poison Oak.
I was expecting raw and powerful just based on the song title here, so I was a bit surprised when this song kicked off with a super delicate and soft intro. Don’t get me wrong, it ramps up, but it never quite hits that chaotic vibe that I was expecting. Instead, this song seems to focus on emotion and the way that Poison Oak lets emotion seep out of every word and beat is truly beautiful. Even with that emotion, there’s a sense of power here. It’s the kind of power that commands your attention. That met with the brilliant word choice throughout this three and a half minute long song means that Poison Oak’s world is such an easy one to fall into and one that, after listening to “Skateboard Kid,” you surely won’t want to leave. Don’t worry– Poison Oak has some other songs out there, so when you inevitably fall in love with them after hearing this track, feel free to dig into what else this Australia-based band has to offer out there.
