Happy Friday, everyone! I had a pretty good week and am gearing up for a pretty insane weekend. Honestly, it’s hard to concentrate on work right now knowing that, as soon as I leave work, I’m heading to a festival that will be featuring over 100 amazing Minnesota acts. That being said, I still have a full day of work ahead of me so I need to buckle down and get some work done before the weekend festivities. Some of that work includes sharing out some amazing new music so let’s get the day started off right with “It’s Not A Costume” from El Chavito.
You ever have something you want to say but can’t find the words? Do you ever review a concert and you feel like you have so many things you want to bring up but, when push comes to shove, you can’t find the right words to describe what you want? That’s kind of what this song is about. As El Chavito puts it, “It’s Not A Costume is the sound of naming something that once felt impossible to say: I’m exploring my gender expression, and I don’t have it all figured out. The song sits in that messy middle phase of imposter syndrome, the pressure to define yourself, the quiet fear of challenging social norms, and the need to push back against people who would rather criticize than understand. These clothes aren’t some kind of act. It’s an expression of what’s real.” Obviously, this goes a lot deeper than what I mentioned but I love that about this song. You can take it at face value and make it relatable to you or you can get lost in the story of El Chavito. Either way, there’s no denying that this is an infectious and powerful skate-punk anthem for the ages.
