I have to get on a plane tomorrow. Although I’m excited to get away, I’m not excited for the plane ride. I hate planes. Just stepping foot in an airport gives me an insane amount of anxiety and knowing that I have to go through that in less than twenty-four hours has me feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, stressed, and, well, anxious. I can’t let it get the best of me. I need to get stuff done today so I’m not stuck working the whole time I’m out of town so here’s to hoping that filling my day with new music will help me stay leveled out today.
Flint, Michigan-based Approaching Autumn has become a staple in the daily playlist of my life and it’s because of songs like “Lace’s Out.” This song is angsty and it’s powerful but there’s also this subtle tenderness behind all of the racket and chaos. The vocals throughout this three minute and twenty second song are relentless. They are sinister and extreme but, again, there’s this subtlety of tenderness that is emphasized by the clean vocals that pop in and out of the track. The layers of the dual vocals against the intense drum, guitar, and bass parts that drive this song forward make “Lace’s Out” feel deep. Maybe this is all because I’m looking for comfort in everything as I try to grapple with the idea of getting on a plane tomorrow and maybe it’s not even really there but, even if I’m wrong on the tenderness that I felt throughout this song, I’m not wrong on the fact that this song will blow you away and, after just one listen, you will surely be hooked on Approaching Autumn like I am.
