Girl at the Rock Shows

Okay, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a huge fan of orchestral music. Don’t get me wrong, I recognize the talent that it takes to perform it, and I love how emotive it can be, but it just feels so stuffy to me, and I tend to avoid it. That’s why I was a bit hesitant to check out “Paris Disagreement” from The Living Orchestra. I mean, it’s right there in the name. The Living ORCHESTRA. Even though I was hesitant, something in my gut told me I had to check this out and, per usual, I went with said gut and couldn’t be happier about that decision.

Yes, this song has an orchestral sound to it. You hear it right off the bat with a symphony of strings that kicks off the song, but as it moves in, it turns into a spirited track that feels very Will Wood & The Tapeworms with an almost Gogol Bordello kind of drama behind it. This song came out on Earth Day (which happened to also be the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement) and is part of The Living Orchestra’s album ‘Last Generation,’ which is, as they put it, “an ambitious climate crisis rock opera.” I have you hooked, don’t I? As you listen to this song, you hear everything from an urgency to fight back, along with a beauty that makes you crumble and melt into this song in a way that does not typically happen. The Living Orchestra performed this song along with the rest of ‘Last Generation’ at Vancouver’s Hollywood Theatre. It was a one-night-only performance that brought the album to life through a full-scale live performance with an 18-person choir, visuals, and a whole dang light show. I only wish I had found this song sooner and had had the chance to experience the epicness in person. Here’s to hoping The Living Orchestra takes this album on the road and makes a stop in the Twin Cities.
