Girl at the Rock Shows

Today has been a struggle physically, but mentally, I’m all here. I hate when that happens. When you’re feeling under the weather and you know that your body needs a break, but your mind is ready to take on the world. It puts you in a strange spot where you want to just go home and go to bed, but you also want to tackle every single email in your inbox and every single task on your to-do list. I’m not sure how today is going to shake out, but I know that, right now, I’m going to lean into that mental feeling of wanting to conquer the world by checking out yet another new single.

State Power doesn’t hold back when it comes to “Spoils of Empire.” The fourth single from their debut LP ‘Hyperstition,’ “Spoils of Empire” starts off fast and intense and really never comes down off of that hill. Although a super intense and thrashy piece of chaotic art, there’s a message behind this song that is absolutely worth paying attention to. As the band puts it, “The track describes a future scenario where the rich and powerful West loses its grip on the rest of the world, as the imperial core breaks down due to a powerful AI gone rogue.” Ten years ago, I would have called this a fantasy piece, but in this day and age, it all feels so real, and I love the way that you don’t just hear State Power tell the story behind this track; you feel it. It’s desperate, it’s intense. It’s perfect.
