I don’t have a quirky story or anything to share right now. It’s Monday morning. I’m stuck at work and feeling very under the weather. The only thing that’s keeping me going at this point is the promise of an after work nap but I still have hours to go before I get there so I need something to both distract me and keep me going like “Codename Kids Next Year” from Pillow Fort.
“Codename Kids Next Year” is Pillow Fort’s first release since 2023. I’m not sure what the band has been doing since 2023, but whatever it was, it worked for them because this song is flawless. This song is all heart in the vein of The Maine but with an infectious energy that feels a bit more like Jeff Rosenstock or Pup. It’s raw but polished, and it’s full of life and poignant lines that tell the age-old tale of growing up and moving on. I love how the vocals command this song. Don’t get me wrong, the instrumentation definitely brings the words to life, but I found myself paying more attention to the words than anything else. They feel like a diary. More specifically, like my diary. From the relatable message of this song to the catchiness and anthemic sound, everything about “Codename Kids Next Year” from Pillow Fort is perfect for an early Monday morning.
