I’m a pop-punk princess, so it goes without saying that I hate my hometown. Okay, maybe that’s a bit too strong of wording, but really, I don’t think I’d be half the person I am today if I hadn’t packed up the day after I graduated high school. At the same time, I wouldn’t be who I am had I not grown up in a dead-end kind of town. I love anthems about packing up and moving on because, well, that’s what I did with my life. That was nearly twenty years ago at this point but it’s a sentiment that still resonates with me and that’s one of the many reasons I was instantly hooked by Darro’s new song “back again”.
At face value, this pop leaning pop-punk jam is about leaving your hometown but, on a deeper level, it’s about packing up and moving on while leaving some of your baggage behind. It’s a super summery song full of riffs that will get stuck in your head and lines of notes that will become instant anthems in your heart. It’s raw and powerful but also perfectly polished into a gem of a banger. There’s definitely a taste of nostalgia throughout this song, but Darro has a very fresh take on that nostalgia making this song feel like a breath of fresh air while fitting in perfectly with those playlists that take us all back to when things were just a bit simpler.
