Yesterday was terrible. It was just a bad day for me. Nothing terrible or life-shattering happened. It was just a bad day.
I saw Brand New again last night.
My day went from terrible to the greatest day ever in the 25 seconds it took for the band to takeover the stage.
When I saw these guys in April, I was in my hometown of Des Moines, Iowa with one of my best friends. Last night I was all alone in my current city of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Seeing one of your favorite bands alone, instead of with a friend, is a completely different experience.
When I was with my friend, as much as I love him, I felt the need to keep my composure. We stayed in back for majority of the show and just enjoyed the music and each other’s company. When I was alone last night I was up in it. I was drenched in other people’s sweat. I was being pushed, kicked, punched. I was fighting for space to breathe. I was gasping for every breath. I was screaming every word.
I lost it last night. The music started and I lost it completely. Just like when I saw them in April, I was instantly transported right back to my bedroom at my dad’s house. I could smell the stale nag champa incense. I could see the walls plastered with stickers and cut outs from Alternative Press magazine issues.
I lost it last night. The set list was just right. Each song sounded better than the last. Each word was the word I was dying to hear. Each guitar chord struck my heart like lightning.
I lost it last night.
When I got home I had one of those, “I can’t believe this is my life” moments. I have an awesome job with coworkers that I love. I have some of the greatest friends on the planet no matter how far away they are. I have the most supportive family that you could ever ask for. The best part? I get to go to concerts almost every night of my life.
I get to feel more in a night than some people feel in a lifetime. That’s why I do this.
I lost myself last night and I had never felt so alive.
