It has been a day. That goes without saying. It’s a Monday. I try not to be that person that gets hung up on Monday’s but today has been particularly rough. Thankfully, I have a show tonight to help me cope but that’s still not for a couple of hours so maybe checking out Quantum Drop Love’s brand new album ‘Where Nightmares Are Made’ will help bridge the gap.
The five-song EP kicks off with “Worlds Away”. The track starts off with an eerie vibe but, within mere seconds, you get blasted in the face with Quantum Drop Love’s distinct sound. ‘ll be honest, it took me a bit to get used to the vocals. At first, the words seem to just stream together giving it an almost too lazy type feel but they quickly grew on me as a signature sound of Quantum Drop Love. Although only the first song, you get to hear many different styles throughout the four minutes and eighteen seconds that “Worlds Away” lasts. That almost industrial hard rock of Powerman 5000, the pop-punk styling of something akin to Silverstein, and then vocals that, at times, seem to try and go for a Saosin vibe– it’s a cool blend and has me super excited to check out the remaining four tracks.
“The Nature of Beauty” has another epic beginning that really pulls you into the song. The intro here is quite a bit longer than on the first song and really showcases the tender side of this band before the song goes into what can only be considered to be organized chaos. Reminding me more of bands like Showbread and almost a little old-school grind quality like Dr. Acula, I loved the contrast throughout this song. I feel like instead of the vocals that slide from word to word as they did in “Worlds Away”, you get to hear the full story in “The Nature of Beauty” and it’s, well, beautiful.
Third on this EP is “A House of Wolves” which instantly kicks off like a Chiodos song in all of the right away until Quantum Drop Love kicks it into high gear with their distinct and bi-polar blend. Really, that’s the highlight and key to this band. They blend so many things and, although to the untrained ear, it may all just sound like a mess, to me, it sounds like pure magic. There’s just so many elements throughout this track for me to list from instrumental breaks that reminded me of Born of Osiris’ “Abstract Art” to slight post-hardcore inspired breaks. Again, all over the place but patched together in a genius way– this song was absolutely a standout track for me.
I was a bit taken aback by the clean guitar sound that kicks off “Locks of Loath” and was surprised as they lasted well into this track. It’s not that they were bad in any way but was just such a shift from what was heard in the previous tracks. It gives this fourth song more of a standard rock n’ roll vibe but, really, it’s far from standard. I only say that because there seemed to be a more alt-rock influence here but there’s still the same angst, aggression, and chaos that Quantum Love Drop does so well scattered throughout. Again, the blend of countless genres and influences in this song is pure genius and something I have never heard pulled off so flawlessly before.
My only complaint about this release is how short it is because we are already at the last track, “The Last Bite”. Definitely the most epic track on the album, there’s something oddly atmospheric about the intro but then the song breaks into something almost a little more pop-punk than the previous tracks. Obviously ignore all of the screaming when I say that as this is still an insanely aggressive track but there are just a few more breaks where I see the pop-punk influence shine through and that’s something I will always get down with.
‘Where Nightmares Are Made’ is all over the place stylistically which makes it perfect for a person like me who suffers from music ADD. Regardless of what moment you tune in throughout this album, you will be hit with a wall of sound and energy that is beyond perfect and will definitely catch your attention.
