Whenever I see or hear the words “Stayin’ Alive”, I can’t help but think about that one episode of The Office where they sing this song when learning to do CPR. Silly and a bit ridiculous, I know but that’s what came to my mind when Rebuilder’s song of the same name came across my desk. Thankfully, this song is so good that within the first few seconds, my idea of this phrase completely changed and I will now think of this band and this song when I hear it instead of that old Office episode.
This song draws you in in an epic way. It slow and steady at first, subtly laying the ground work for what’s to come. As soon as the vocals come in, you get a taste of the sheer amount of emotional power that Rebuilder puts into their music and although it’s still a bit low key in the beginning, I felt that this power made this track deafening. Stylistically, “Stayin’ Alive” is a rollercoaster ride. It seems to stay slightly settled in the indie-pop world of things but you get so much more than that throughout the four minute song. You get elements of punk, rock, folk– seriously everything and Rebuilder sews all of these styles together flawlessly to create a distinct and powerful sound.
I’m not sure where Rebuilder has been all my life but they are here now and I can’t wait to hear more from this amazing group.
