Girl at the Rock Shows

I still have a little bit of time before I have to head to my show tonight. I should probably be doing a million other things, like laundry and cleaning out the cat’s litter boxes, but that just doesn’t sound like fun right now. What does sound like fun is checking out some new music starting with the new EP from The Tryals titled ‘ Collection’.

This quick five-song EP starts with the title track, “Collection.” It takes little time for The Tryals to hit you with their signature sound in this first song. After just a couple of seconds of ambiance, the band comes in and hits you like a punch to the gut with a sound that feels very Every Time I Die inspired. Sure, it starts off slow and sweet, but you quickly find out that this band’s signature is unrelenting power. The vocals are intense throughout this song, which isn’t hard since it’s only a minute and a half long, but you can tell that power will be the name of the game when it comes to all five of these songs.

I wasn’t wrong about that, and as “Glass Breaker” took over my speakers, I continued to bump the volume up on my speakers. This second song has a very metalcore inspiration behind it comes with the addition of some clean vocals that perfectly command your ears over everything else happening in the song. The cleanly sung vocals change the feeling of this song so drastically yet in a beautiful way. You can still tell that this song is from The Tryals and still get that unmistakable ETID vibe, but there are some moments when the clean vocals are happening in this track that remind me more of Thrice or something similar. No need to fear though. If your ears instantly turned off when I said Thrice, know that that influence doesn’t last long, and this track turns into one epic breakdown that Thrice would never pull off.

“Gray” is the third track on this album and was my introduction to this band. The second I heard it, I was in love, and hearing it again reminded me of the thrill I felt the first time. There’s almost an electronic influence in some of the instrumentation of this track that isn’t felt in the first two songs. This adds a theatrical and epic feeling to an already intense song. Again, The Tryals do a great job of blending sung vocals into this track while maintaining the intensity they do so well. At three minutes and ten seconds, this is the longest track on ‘Collection,’ but it’s still not enough. Sure, if you only have a few minutes, listen to “Gray” but I promise it will just lead you into The Tryals world and leave you wanting so much more.

Although misleading, “Three” is the title of the fourth track from this powerful EP. Again, this song has a small intro, but in no time, The Tryals hit you with their powerful sound, and this song turns into an intense song that will have you wanting to start a mosh pit in whatever space you’re in at the moment. I feel like this song turns the focus onto the brilliant guitar work that can be heard throughout this album. There’s something about the vocals here that gives you a chance to hone in on that instrumentation and appreciate it for the talent that The Tryals clearly has.

‘Collections’ closes out with “Paint It In Blood,” instead of going out in a calm nature, it’s as if The Tryals have saved the most intense for last. This song is ear-shattering in all of the right ways, and although “Gray” was my introduction to this band and an instant classic for me, “Paint It In Blood” instantly turned into my favorite track on the album. The pace of this song is fast, which means it could quickly turn into uncontrolled chaos, but The Tryals prove they are more than just a “loud band.” The composition and control that they showcase in this final song is genuinely just the icing on the cake when it comes to a brilliant album.

If you like power, intensity, unrelenting screams, heavy-hitting drums, slamming guitars, or anything of the like, ‘Collection’ from The Tryals is for you. Even if none of those words do anything for you, you should listen to’ Collection’ to hear the apparent talent and musicianship behind this band.
