I’ve had ‘Whiskey Hotel Tango’ from wht.rbbt.obj. sitting on my desk for a little bit now. Honestly, I love the album art. It’s dark and haunting but also comes off as a classic masterpiece. Was that the vibe I would get from this five-song EP? Was it going to be a classic masterpiece, or is the album artwork completely misleading? Let’s take a listen and find out.

Opening up this album is “No Rainbows In Indiana”. Now, I don’t know if there are rainbows in Indiana or not, but I know that this track instantly had me lost in wht.rbbt.obj’s world in a perfect way. There’s such an ideal swagger and attitude to this song. It’s filthy with a little bit of a blues influence in the instrumentation, but overall, I would stop short of calling this a blues track. There’s something a bit more rockin’ about the overall vibe here, and the vocals sometimes have an almost jazzy influence. Whether you want to call this blues rock or not, I promise this opening song will get you hooked.

There is something familiar about the elements in the second track, “Love On Hold,” but what the group has done with those elements gives this song (and band) a distinct sound. It’s a little jazzy and sultry but has a driving bassline and drum part that gives the song a slight edge and attitude. You hear that attitude come to fruition with some of the vocal parts that come to a climax throughout the track, leaving you with a powerful sense of triumphant energy. Just when you get ready to jump from your seat and start pushing and shoving your way through the imaginary crowd in your head (okay, maybe that’s just me), the song settles back into a more standard rock n’ roll vibe.

The shortest track on this five-song EP is “Give It To Me,” but this was my favorite. The beat is catchy and danceable, which seems so different from the previous two tracks, yet the tone in the vocals makes sure you know this is another wht.rbbt.obj song. I love how the vocals dance between being crystal clear and a bit smoky and sultry in the blink of an eye. Another thing I love is the anthemic chorus, but how there’s something about it that keeps it from feeling standard. I’m getting a feeling of danger and wonder in the chorus here. It feels almost super personal with the way it’s delivered. I really don’t know how else to describe it, but it had me hanging on every word. I may or may not have listened to this song several times before moving on.

“Queen’s Gambit”, again, completely changes the vibe of this EP. With a bit of a darker yet more commercial influence in this track, I got a bit of a ZZ Ward vibe from this one. I know that entire sentence feels like an insane contradiction, but I genuinely think you’ll understand with one listen to this song. This song is one of those tracks that makes you want to pull on some knee high boots and go show all of those people who wronged you that you are better off without them. Again, it’s a bit of a random thing, but that’s what was playing through in my head as this song played. It’s powerful and triumphant with this bit of snark and teeth behind every word while staying extremely sultry and sexy. I was already lost in wht.rbbt.obj’s world before this song, but this track really made me lost in all the right ways.

I wasn’t ready to leave this world of sexy and spicy energy, but after “Queen’s Gambit” is the final track on this EP, “Keep You Like A Secret (Tidal Wave)”. Although this song is over five minutes long, I needed more. This song shows an irresistible, more sensitive side of wht.rbbt.obj. Although I adore the badass energy that radiated through the previous tracks, I really appreciated this song’s more tender and touchy vibe. It felt like a dark and smoky jazz club, which, looking back, makes sense as there were nods to this style in the previous tracks, but at the same time, it completely caught me off guard. The slower and more deliberate tone of this song felt like a perfect way to ease back into the real world, so as much as I didn’t want the journey that was ‘Whiskey Hotel Tango’ to end, at least they let me down gently and made sure I was warm and cozy before letting go of me.

From swagger to sexy beauty- wht.rbbt.obj does it all, and they do it all so well. What a cool listen that would fit any time of the day and any mood.
