American Sigh’s new album ‘Virtue Signal’ isn’t out until May 17th. I know that feels like it’s a ways away but after one listen to their single “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”, you’ll be wishing and hoping for May 17th to be right around the corner. I’m absolutely thrilled to debut this new single to you and help American Sigh get all of the love they deserve for this single and their upcoming album.
The amount of calm that took me over as soon as I hit play on this track was deafening in all of the right ways. Although I’ve been getting a lot done today, it’s one of those days where the realization that there are just not enough hours to get it all done is hitting me hard. Thankfully for me, this song gave me a chance to catch my breath, take a couple of deep ones, and just take a break for a second. Everything about this song is smooth but, at the same time, has a very DIY spirit behind it. There’s something raw about the word choice and vocals alike that will instantly whisk you off your feet and put your head in the clouds. Have no fear though, American Sigh does a great job in this track of ushering back down to earth before the song is done.
I feel like Theo Matz (mastermind behind American Sigh) describes this song best:
“I wrote Great Pacific Garbage Patch when I was feeling a lot of despair deep into the pandemic. It came pretty quick after I started getting the main riff. I took a concept I learned from banjo and applied it to my guitar playing which kind of ended up Bon Iver adjacent. It came together quickly both inside and outside the studio. Sage threw on amazing drums on the first pass. Derek Ted used a boss looping station to manipulate some vocal samples which play throughout the song. We layered a lot of vocal takes which gave it a unique sound on the record.”
