There are some bands I write about just once and others that I write about repeatedly. GreenWing is one of those bands I have written about multiple times but am not done shoving them down your throat. Why is this, you might ask? I genuinely think that GreenWing is one of those bands that could be the next big thing, and I don’t want you to miss out on their rise to the top. A case in point would be their new album ‘Eatin’ It.’ I’ve already written about two of the singles from this album (“Enough” and “At The Time“) but now let’s take some time and dig into this eight song album as a full piece of art.
‘Eatin’ It’ opens up with a personal favorite of mine- “At The Time”. As I just mentioned, I’ve already reviewed this single in depth, so I will save time here, but what a way to kick off a release. It’s one of those songs that is as catchy as it is deep and is a signature move of GreenWing. It also lays out GreenWing’s genius songwriting skills, lining up words that will hit all of us in different ways, but I promise, it will hit you in just the way and help you get cozied into GreenWing’s world.
Second on this album is “Little Regret”. This song starts with a retro-sounding guitar with the slightest hint of fuzz that creates a perfect atmosphere. This song comes off as a bit more tender and delicate as far as the vocals go, but don’t let that trick you into thinking there’s a lack of energy here. This is a larger-than-life kind of song that feels very arena-ready. That’s a phrase that I don’t throw around lightly but, just one listen to “Little Regret” and you will understand what I mean. It’s such a well-written and anthemic track that, as it plays, it is easy to picture being performed live in a large venue. Is this a sign of things to come for GreenWing? I don’t know, but I truly hope so.
There’s something oddly simplistic about the guitar lick that introduces you to “Consequences”. Really, this song is fairly simplistic feeling in general but, again, it’s just GreenWing showing the power behind their genius. Another powerfully anthemic track with lines of notes and words that will instantly get stuck in your head, I found myself smiling as the words flew by. “arthritic, aches and pains my knees telling me to quit My body bent out of shape from what I did when I was a kid.” I mean, come on, who can’t relate to that feeling as we all seem to age a bit quicker than we would have hoped for. It’s a charming song about a topic that we all have to deal with, and I love that about “Consequences.”
Speaking of lyrics, the first couple of lines of “Come Clean” instantly hooked me. Lines like “We listened to pop punk” and “Finding comfort in cliches”– I instantly felt a wave of emotions hit me as this song played through. It’s about regretting some of the things you’ve done in years gone by but knowing well enough that all you can do is grow up, accept fault, and apologize. I love the angst attached to the words in this song and how it translates into the energy radiating from this three-and-a-half-minute-long song. Although I love “At The Time” and “Enough,” the two songs I’ve previously reviewed, I really think that “Come Clean” is my favorite track on this album.
Isn’t it wild how, when you fall into a band’s world through a song or album or seeing them live, you feel this super strong connection to said band? That’s what hit me as I sat at my desk listening to “Better Than Yesterday.” I smiled, teared up, laughed, and did so many things while listening to this fifth track because each line seemed to be directed towards me. Now, I know that’s not particularly true, but the fact that GreenWing was able to pull me into their world so quickly and hit me with a song that made me feel like this within just five tracks says everything you need to know about the genuine heart and passion that fills each of their songs.
The sixth track on this album is “Fences.” Although I would stop short of calling this a ballad, it definitely has ballad-like tendencies. The beat is more slow and steady rather than poppy and anthemic when compared to the previous couple of songs. Although there’s a slight hint of darkness and cynicism in all of the songs here, I feel like the band kind of hones into the shadows of their music here, and it leads to a beautifully stunning work of art that, again, will make you feel everything and nothing at the same time.
I always wonder how bands pick the title track for their albums, but one listen to “Eatin’ It,” and I understood why this album was named after this song. It’s another genius track that stands out for its playful energy. There’s still that snarky and heartfelt energy throughout this song, but there’s also this playful vibe in everything from the instrumentation to the words. The words of this track might not scream “dance to me,” but the beat absolutely does, so I warn you– “Eatin’ It” might have you jumping out of your seat and dancing. Don’t worry; that’s normal. Please just let it happen to truly enhance your experience of listening to this track.
Closing out ‘Eatin’ It’ is the powerful and notable single “Enough.” Much like the way we started this review, this is another song that I’ve already reviewed for you, so I promise not to dwell on this one, but I will say that the choice to close out this album with this song was a genius choice, not just a grab from the hat. “Enough” gives you a sense of rejuvenating and triumphant power in such a great way. It’s as if GreenWing is letting you move on with your day and onto other music if you want, but, at the same time, they are daring you to forget their name and sound.
I’ve already reviewed a lot of fantastic music this year, but ‘Eatin’ It’ from GreenWing hit me a bit harder than some of those previous reviews. GreenWing is a band that you will love regardless of what kind of music you like. Their words and presentation of said words are so raw and honest that they will surely make you feel everything you could possibly ask for (and things that maybe you’ve been trying to suppress). Although I absolutely support therapy and people in therapy, it’s not for me. Instead, I look for music that can support me and help me heal instead. That being said, GreenWing just became my new emotional support band.
