Girl at the Rock Shows

Although I’ve been on a bit of a Murderfolk kick today, my most recent listening binge has been nonstop The Forecast. Something about that perfectly nostalgic and emotional band has just been hitting me so perfectly, so I feel like, when I don’t know what to listen to these days, that’s what I fall back on. There’s nothing wrong with that, and I’ve loved re-living their classics while jumping head first into their new ones, but honestly, there’s not much from them out there and I’m already starting to get bored with the binge (even though I’ll never get bored with the band). Thankfully, AITA’s “The Ocean” came across my desk, and it instantly reminded me of The Forecast.

“The Ocean” is a cliche pop-punk jam when it comes to the lyrics. That sounds harsh, but it’s true. It’s a song about leaning on yourself for support. About pulling yourself up by the bootstraps to get yourself out of a rut regardless of how hard it is to do so. A tale as old as time, but one that is so beautifully presented by AITA in this track. The vocals are silky smooth but come with this subtle amount of heartbreaking energy, which is one of the many reasons I was instantly reminded of The Forecast as this song played through. Add a Blink-182-worthy chorus that hits (and hits hard) before the song falls back into something a bit more tender and soft, and you are left with a rollercoaster ride of perfection.
