I’m a bit basic in the way that I love true crime documentaries, so, naturally, I was drawn to Mikey Demilio’s new single “2 Dead In New Brunswick” instantly. I may have checked out this single due to the eye-catching name but I stayed because I felt completely overtaken by this track in all of the right ways.
“2 Dead In New Brunswick” is not about true crime at all. It’s actually song made up of stories that come from Mikey’s life growing up in New Jersey. It’s a raw and honest song with diary-styled vocals, but it all comes polished in Mikey’s signature brand of skate-punk leaning, surf-rocking sounding, post-punk-infused tones. At first, I wasn’t super in love with Mike Demilio’s voice. I found it to be just slightly too quirky and distinct with a strange tone behind it but, as the song went on, I realized that it’s this unique layer that adds to the stunning charm that comes through in this song. “2 Dead In New Brunswick” is neither fast moving nor slow and steady. It’s the perfect middle point of all good things so what are you waiting for? Check out this song and fall in love with the one and only Mikey Demilio!
