Girl at the Rock Shows

Anberlin was performing in town last week. I wasn’t there. Honestly, I never heard back about covering the show, but I also didn’t fight for it that hard. As much as I wanted to take a trip down memory lane, Anberlin was never quite my thing. They leaned a bit more religious than I could go, but that didn’t stop me from rocking out to some of their tracks back in the day. When I saw they were coming to town, I started to wonder if this was just a nostalgia kind of tour or a tour to promote something new. Well, low and behold, I had a “new” song from Anberlin sitting in my inbox that day. The only reason I put “new” in quotation marks is because “A Day Late” is actually a track off of their 2005 album, ‘Never Take Friendship Personal.’

This new version of the classic track comes complete with a new video. The most significant difference about this version of the song from the original is that Matty Mullins is now on vocals. Matty, known for his work in Memphis May Fire, has always felt like an odd choice to join such a boppy and poppy throwback kind of act, but this single proves that he fits the spot. Outside of that, this version of the song doesn’t feel that different from the original decades ago. What does change things is the video that comes with you. You get an inside look at this band and tour life. Although it’s not a standard trip down memory lane, something about seeing these grown men doing the same silly things they did back in the day will shoot shockwaves of heart-warming adoration down your spine. Whether you have been with Anberlin since day one or are a bit of a late bloomer and have entered their world because of the addition of Matty Mullins, this new version of “A Day Late” will surely make you feel a sense of magic that will not be soon forgotten.
