I should be more stressed out than usual right now. Not only do the emails keep on piling up, causing me to fall further and further behind, but this is a short week for me as I head out to Las Vegas for Punk Rock Bowling at the end of the week. I should be crying and counting down the minutes until I can go home and scream in my closet for a little bit but, instead, I’m feeling optimistic, refreshed, and ready to take on the world one email at a time. I’m not sure what this new energy is all about but I’m not about to question a good thing and will, instead, dig for a song to fit this new mentality. That dig didn’t take long because I quickly stumbled upon “Take Your Money Back” from Westerly.
“Take Your Money Back” is, as the band puts it, “a fierce breakup [song] with capitalism” and if that’s not a message that we can all get behind, I don’t know what is. This song is punchy, gritty, and full of this super cool Southern-styled angst that makes you want to jump up on your desk and starting kicking everything off your desk to the infectious beat of this song. Okay, maybe that’s just me but, truly, this song is just so full of this spitfire type of energy that it’s impossible to listen to it without smiling and moving at least a wee bit. Whether you latch onto the protest anthem vibe of this song or, like me, just get completely and beautifully lost in the grit and energy, “Take Your Money Back” will be a song to play on repeat and Westerly will quickly become your new obsession (and I don’t apologize for that).
