If you know me personally, you’re aware that I’m not particularly fond of retro music. Sure, I like music with a hint of vintage nostalgia behind it, but in my mind, why listen to something really old when there is so much amazing new music out there? I know there are flaws to this way of thinking, and you don’t have to point them out because, truthfully, I’m not going to change because I’m stubborn. That being said, I am starting to find the magic in songs that were written decades ago that really hit a chord given the mess we are living in right now and “All You Fascists”, originally written in 1944 by Woody Guthrie and now reimagined by Beau Jennings & The Tigers, is one of those songs.

In my mind, Woody Guthrie is far from a punk musician but I have always known his lyrics and overall vibe to have punk tendencies. I love how Beau Jennings & The Tigers have brought that to life in this cover. Don’t get me wrong, you still get that folksy jangle that Woody Guthrie is so famous for but Beau adds the perfect amount of snark and swagger to the track to really drive the point of this song and the famed legend behind it home.

As Beau puts it, “This song was written in 1944 by Woody Guthrie, and people have been singing it ever since – it speaks for itself. We (Beau Jennings & The Tigers) performed this during COVID lockdown in the summer of 2020 for a live radio broadcast from a train station here in Norman, OK – not far from the birthplace of Woody. I was going through some old files recently and discovered the recording and it seemed like a good time to share. Happy 4th of July.”

Whether you are celebrating the holiday with fireworks and a barbecue or, like me, plan on celebrating the day by not celebrating at all and just finally getting caught up on sleep and work, I hope you have “All You Fascists” from Beau Jennings & The Tigers blaring in the background.
