I’m not typically one for dance music. I find it repetitive and, quite frankly, obnoxious. That being said, when I hear “Mixed Reception” from LIMO SCENE, I fell in love. This is absolutely a dance anthem but it comes with a twist. This song has a woven texture made up of everything from post-punk to synthwave and even a little disco razzle-dazzle. It had me in love, it had me dancing, and it had me wanting to learn so much more about this Jacksonville, Florida-based band so I jumped on the opportunity to get to know this band a bit better and hear more about “Mixed Reception.”
Everyone says that every crowd is their favorite but, what city has the best audience and why is it Minneapolis?
Paul: When Theodore Wirth was hired as Minneapolis Park Board superintendent in 1904, he oversaw a park building project that ensured every Minneapolitan lived within six blocks of a park. We have yet to play a show in Minneapolis, but with that many parks, we can only assume Minneapolitans make the best concert audience in the upper Midwest, perhaps the whole contiguous United States
Mason: Hotdish
What’s your go-to coffee order?
Mason: Cold, black, no ice.
Paul: Thanks to the amazing local shops in Jacksonville, I’ve become a total snob. I love trying out single-origin coffees from around the globe. Or an extra large from Dunkies
How would you describe your music to your parents?
Mason: It’s the kind of disappointment you can be proud of.
Paul: like the soundtracks to those ’80s movies where kids have to save the day by going to space or finding buried treasure, but with more angst.
What’s the worst concert you ever went to?
Mason: Anytime there is an emcee at a drum and bass event. No, unacceptable, stop, go home, I promise you nobody wants that. Even your supportive and loving friends just don’t want to hurt your feelings, but you need to stop.
Paul: I’ve been to a few downright bad shows, but I have great memories of making fun of them with my friends, so I guess there are no worst shows
What is the best topping for pizza and why is it pineapple?
Mason: How much did Big Pineapple pay you for this plug?
If you could compare yourself to a bird, what bird would it be and why?
Mason: An emperor penguin because I am flightless, cold, and walk like an off-kilter dryer.
Paul: Probably Launchpad McQuack because I think I look like I know what I’m doing but I totally don’t
Favorite lyrics of all time?
Mason: “Machine machine machine machine Machine machine machine machine” Machine machine -Kraftwerk Man Machine
Paul: My favorite band/artist/project from the last ten years is definitely Sun Airway. They craft amazing songs with beautiful lyrics. They have a song called New Movements with a line that sticks with me: “You turn to glass just so I have something to crash through.”
What’s your favorite menu item at Taco Bell?
Mason: Everything at Taco Bell tastes the same so it’s really what shape do you want your Taco Bell served in. I guess nacho shape.
Paul: Cheesy bean and rice burrito
If you were to rob a bank, what would be the song playing in the getaway car as you escape?
Mason: Turbo Killer by Carpenter Brut
Paul: If You Leave Me Now by Chicago
What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?
Paul: The National in St. Augustine. I had pit tickets and Matt crowd walked to the upper decks as a roadie continuously fed more and more mic cable. It was bonkers
If you could have dinner with any musician, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Paul: Huey Lewis. Imagine having a bad time with Huey Lewis. That’s right, you can’t.
Have you ever been able to finish a Rubik’s Cube?
Mason: You said these were going to be softball questions.
How many times have you ridden in a limo?
Mason & Paul: Ironically, only once.
What’s your favorite method of listening to music?
Mason: Free youtube to mp3 converter
Paul: Cassette. There’s a very specific sound that comes from cassette, especially if it’s a little worn out, that just reminds me so much of childhood
Okay, now that we got those super important questions out of the way, let’s talk about “Mixed Reception”, your new single! Can you tell me where you were when you wrote/came up with this track?
Mason: There was a synth line we recorded at the end of another track, something I had forgotten about and by chance showed to Paul and he was like “that’s the track”, and we went from there
Out of every line of lyrics in this track, which is your favorite and why?
Mason: “Crosseyed nightdrive.” Relatable in a nostalgic way.
Paul: We name-drop host of NPR’s program On Point in the song, Meghna Chakrabarti. It wasn’t for any specific reason, I was just plugging in place holders that have the right amount of syllables while building the lyrical structure and I ended up leaving it in because it was fun
You dropping this single on a 3.5″ floppy is a joke, right?
Mason: Oh you mean the save icon, the 1.44mb clear plastic diskette from 1994. Absolutely, you’ll need an A drive to hear it though.
Paul: We literally rip our singles to floppy. It takes a lot of compression to make it fit, but we do it, they work, and they sound glorious in their own way
There’s a grit that comes with this song that took me into a whole other era of music which is insane but say a modern rapper covered this. Who would you hope it was and why?
Mason: Earl Sweatshirt probably, or Haarper. I think either would bring a tactful vulgarity to counterpoint our sound nicely.
Paul: Doja Cat. She rules, and she has her own flow and style that could totally make this song, and oh my God can you get Doja Cat to cover our song?!
What color do you associate with this song and why?
Mason: #400080. html and hexcode are dated, too
As of now, “Mixed Reception” is just a single but can we expect more music soon?
Paul: Yes! We’re working on a whole EP of stuff that should be wrapped up early next year.
What about shows? Any chance I could convince you to come to Minnesota?
Mason: Def, Florida is too hot
Paul: We are playing the Sing Out Loud festival in St. Augustine in September, and are starting to book some things further out. Again, I’d love to play in the Twin Cities…All. Those. Parks.
Is there anything else you want to let people know about “Mixed Reception” or LIMO SCENE in general?
Mason: All of our music is set against a background of inequity, exploitation, genocide, and a sense of impending social reorganization to benefit and promote the worst aspects of human nature. This track represents our vain attempt to hide from ourselves our responsibility to enact meaningful change for others.
Paul: We hope you love this song and enjoy our music. We appreciate everyone out there who listens.
I feel like the answers I got to these questions from both Mason and Paul were as dancable as this track. They were fun but also introduced me to LIMO SCENE a bit better in a strange way. Although I don’t appreciate being called out about my relationship with Big Pineapple, I loved seeing how the personalities of this band seem to lead the charge when it comes to their unique yet relatable sound. All in all, if listening to “Mixed Reception” doesn’t have you falling in love with LIMO SCENE, this interview will surely do the trick. If none of that works, then I guess you could just go ahead and stop listening to music because, really, what are you even doing if you don’t love something about this band?
“Mixed Reception” is out now and be sure to follow LIMO SCENE on all of their socials so you don’t miss what’s next for this amazing band.
