Whenever I hear the words “Paper Plane,” my head instantly goes to either the M.I.A. song of close to the same name (“Paper Planes”) or “Airplanes” from B.o.B. Okay, I can’t quite explain why my head goes to that second song, but here we are. I’m wondering if this “Paper Plane” from Life Awaits featuring Aaron Gillespie of Underoath can change that.
The crystal clear vocals that kick off this song instantly caught my ears and heart. It’s a dramatic intro that will stop you dead in your tracks and, as the song moves on, and you follow these vocals into the lush soundscape that Life Awaits brings to the table, it’s impossible to not fall in love with this song and this band in general. Hailing from China, Life Awaits is not a new band. They have been around for years and released their debut ep ‘In Descent’ in 2016. Since then, this band has been grinding and doing their thing. Why that thing hasn’t caught on like wildfire here in the states is beyond me because this song has it all. It has emotion, it has angst, power, peace, and Aaron Gillespie (who is a force himself). The way that Life Awaits blends all of these feelings and sounds so seamlessly to create the anthemic and unique “Paper Plane” is nothing short of genius.
