The name of this band definitely has me thinking that “LOVE HEARTS” is going to be a metal kind of song, which is not at all what I am in the mood for this morning. I almost passed on checking this out because of that, but something in my gut told me to hit play. I don’t know what it was, but this song was calling me. Maybe I was in the mood for metal and just didn’t know it? Maybe this song isn’t even metal? Let’s dig in and see why this is the song that has my attention right now.
Although this song starts off strong and crunchy, it definitely isn’t metal. Sure, it has some metal tendencies, especially when it comes to the guitar tone, but overall, this song from 39th Gate of Hell is a punk song that leans into a more garage-rock vein of sound. It’s a cool blend of vibes, and I love the fact that the vocals don’t quite match what’s happening in the instrumentation. At first, the vocals have an almost spoken word kind of feeling to them before the song continues moving forward and turns into a slightly more poppy and danceable jam. Almost everything about this track seems to be always changing, always evolving, but one thing stays true, and that’s the swagger that comes from this band. Don’t let their band name fool you, 39th Gate of Hell is not a metal band, but absolutely a band that has a unique sound and strong personality that comes through loud and clear in “LOVE HEARTS.”
