“Leave for a While” is not the first song I’m sharing with you from You Were Never Lovelier, but it also won’t be the last. This band has not only won my ears over, but they have also stolen a part of my heart, so I was stoked when I saw their name come across my list of singles to check out for the third time.
This song, like all of the other songs I’ve heard from this Los Angeles-based band, is full of emotion. The beginning of this song is so drenched in raw feeling that it instantly reminded me of the days when I would obsess over Hotel Books. The track doesn’t stay that way. The poetry-styled vocals turn into You Were Never Lovelier’s signature pop-punk leaning sound, but this song felt a bit more tender through and through than the other tracks I’ve heard from this band. This makes sense as this song is about struggling with chronic pain/ depression and suicidal ideation. Nothing about those things is lovely, but what You Were Never Lovelier does with the message is nothing short of powerful and beautiful.
