Girl at the Rock Shows

I honestly don’t know much about seagulls, but I think that it’s safe to assume that they don’t care, if only because of what I’ve seen on social media and in movies. They seem to be fearless creatures who just really don’t care if they ruin your day or not. This has nothing to do with “Self” from Seagulls Don’t Care but, clearly, the name of this band had me hooked so let’s jump in and see what this track is all about.

At the beginning of this song, I figured it would be just another pop-punk kind of jam. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, and, truthfully, they had me hook, line, and sinker with the pop-punk antics that start this song, but, as the track moved on, I realized this band is so much more than that. There’s a little bit of everything here. Sure, you get an anthemic pop-punk bop kind of vibe, but there are moments that have an almost southern twang to them, and other moments that are full of pure emotion to the point where it’s impossible not to let it hit your heartstrings in a perfect way. Not only is Seagulls Don’t Care clearly a super versatile band, but they are also super clean. No matter what kind of vibe or what influence you are hearing in this song (or their other tracks, for that matter), everything comes through super clean making “Self” a truly stunner of a song.
