Dethwish sounds like such a brutal band name, doesn’t it? And the song title, “rot away” evokes this feeling of pure metal and insanity, right? Well, don’t get your head stuck in that world. I was amped up and ready to get my face absolutely melted by this song, but instead, got a comforting feeling of understanding and support when I pushed play on this track.

Don’t get me wrong, “rot away” from Dethwish is stunningly powerful and intense, but that power and intensity come through in the way of emotion rather than sound. Well, that’s kind of a lie. This track has a powerful sound for sure, but it’s not the slaughtering metal sound that I was expecting. This song has a cool blend of everything from emo to shoegaze, all tied up in a little bow of alt-rock goodness. There are moments that have a super infectious and danceable beat behind them, and others where you feel like Dethwish may be riding the edge of chaos. Truthfully, nothing stays the same in this song for long and that’s part of the magic. Because of this constant shifting in vibe and feeling, this three-minute and eleven-second song will be over before you know it, so don’t be afraid to listen to this one a few times through before moving on. It only gets better each time you hear it.
