I don’t typically think that bands are lying to me. I mean, why would they? But, in the case of “Gunpowder” from The Burning Pubcrawlers, I have a super hard time believing that this is their first ever single. It’s just too perfect. Okay, per usual, I’m being dramatic. Do I really think this band is lying to me about this being their first single? No, but it truly is a flawless track and proof that this band is one to keep your eyes on.

The band mentioned in pitching this song to me that it was released during a sold-out show supporting The Real McKenzies in their hometown of Breda, The Netherlands, and, honestly, that makes so much sense. This song has a classic folk punk sound that fits into the Real McKenzies world so perfectly, but there’s something more to the sound of The Burning Pubcrawlers. There’s a little extra grit, a little extra speed, and a little extra angst thrown in as the band’s signature special sauce. Think this is just another folk punk song and band to add to the pile? Think twice. Beyond that signature special sauce, this band throws twists and turns into “Gunpowder” that you would never see coming. Their way with surprising composition and misleading lines of notes that end up in a world you never expected is just the cherry on top of the clear musicianship of this group. Long story short? “Gunpowder” is just the beginning of The Burning Pubcrawlers.
