I keep falling deeper and deeper in love with The Carolyn every time I hear a new song from them, especially when that song is as flawless and powerful as “Routines” is.

“Routines”, as the band puts it, “is about realizing you’ve been the architect of your own burnout — and still not changing a thing.” Jeez, The Carolyn, you don’t have to personally attack me like that! Seriously though, what a strong and powerful message that I think gets lost along the way a lot of the time. As a society, we are told to work until we drop. That money is happiness, and in order to get money, you have to work constantly, and if you work constantly, you will inevitably burn out. Although I admit that this is a flaw and not a great way to live, I am the queen of being the architect of my own burnout. The messed-up thing is that I thrive on that burnout feeling. This has nothing to do with this song, but it just shows how quickly this track will bring up deep thoughts and feelings. Part of that is because of the message behind the track but I think that the main reason for this is because everything The Carolyn does is done with an undeniable sense of heart and passion. You feel like you know the members of this band after listening to just one song because, although flawlessly recorded and produced, there’s something so raw about their music. Don’t believe me? Check out “Routines” and try not to fall in love with this band.
