Girl at the Rock Shows

“Brave” is such a simple word, but one that can evoke so many different emotions. It can make you feel triumphant if you are feeling particularly brave at any given point. It can also make you feel a sense of dread if you’re feeling like you’re not being brave enough. It can bring a sense of panic, a sense of calm, a sense of terror, a sense of peace. It all depends on how you read the word. When it comes to Ryan Butler’s song “Brave,” I get a little bit of all of those aforementioned feelings all wrapped up in an indie rock sound of perfection.

This song starts off slow and steady, really focusing on Ryan’s voice, before you get to hear the power of a Ryan Butler song as the full band comes in. Although his voice remains smooth, calm, and collected, the instrumentation has an almost angular quality that adds a bit of an edge to the track. As the nearly four-minute song moves along, you hear that smooth voice turn into something with a bit more grit, a bit more edge, depending on what word is being sung. This song somehow goes from an indie-pop bop to a grungey alt-rock bop and then ends as a triumphant indie-rock anthem. I love all of the life, the energy, and the power that Ryan Butler has put into “Brave,” but what I think I like more is the energy that listening to this song gave me. I was feeling a bit defeated just due to my workload when I started my journey through this song, but by the end of it, I felt like I was ready to take on whatever the day wants to throw at me.
