It’s Halloween, so it feels fitting to share out “Nightmare of ’78” from The Dahmers, if only based on the song title and band name. This is more than just a song; it’s a soundtrack, and it’s truly the perfect soundtrack to this spooky day.
I love the way that there is something so classic about this track, but at the same time, it definitely has a modern vibe. It takes the punk energy of the 70s and adds this almost pop-inspired modern-day feeling on top of it, creating a sound that, again, feels so foreign but, at times, comes off as slightly familiar. Although the track starts off pretty mellow, it doesn’t take long for the power of The Dahmers to hit you like a high-octane punch to the face. Lyrically, this song is very in line with Halloween as it pays homage to cult horror movies and ideals, but that isn’t my favorite part of “Nightmare of ’79.” My favorite part of this song is the grit. You can feel a sweaty mosh pit forming around you and smell that familiar stink of stale beer that comes with the classiest of dive bars. Long story short, this song isn’t just heard, it’s felt, smelled, and everything in between, making it a standout track for a day full of amazing new music.
