My night could have ended after the Ho99o9 and grandson show happening at The Fillmore on Sunday, but why stop there? I couldn’t ask for a better city to live in because there are so many amazing venues that have so many amazing things happening if you just know where to look, and thankfully, I do. I parked super strategically on Sunday night. Instead of parking right by The Fillmore (where the Ho99o9/grandson show was happening), I parked a couple of blocks away, right next to The Underground Music Venue. I did this because I knew that, even if I was exhausted by the time I left The Fillmore on Sunday, I would have no excuse to not pop into The Underground and see what was happening there. It was as if I were tricking myself, and thankfully, it worked.
I’ll be honest, this is going to be a super short review because I didn’t catch either of the openers at this show (huge apologies to both Fib and Guitar) and headliners they are gutting a body of water (TAGABOW) were already half way through their set by the time I made it to the venue but it would be a huge mistake to not tell you about the amazingness that was happening inside of the Underground Music Venue on Sunday night.
The Underground Music Cafe & Venue is a space that has two different rooms. One room is a super-intimate café, the other a more cavernous, open space. That’s where this show took place. I’ve been to a few shows here, and it’s your standard venue. A big open space with a pretty decent-sized stage up against one of the walls and a small bar against one of the others. It’s nothing to write home about, but it’s a place that welcomes everyone and has already been super comfortable to me. Although that comfort level was still there on Sunday night, the room had undergone a complete transformation. Instead of the band playing on the stage, TAGABOW had brought a small circular stage that was placed right in the middle of the floor. I’ll be honest, I knew this was coming, as a friend had warned me, but I don’t think I was prepared for what this small shift in layout would bring to the show.
There was a level of intimacy that came with this change. Although the stage was raised, it was as if the band and audience had blurred into one level, and it was truly gorgeous. I had never heard of TAGABOW before this show or heard their music, but their lush layers of guitars mixed with the intensity of the drums and the almost eeriness of the vocals seemed to wash over the audience in these beautiful waves of sonic bliss. I watched in awe as some audience members basked in the beauty of these waves, while others felt an undeniable sense of passion and intensity as the waves hit them. For me, the music was bringing me a sense of calm, which felt so foreign after the excitement and chaos I had experienced at the Fillmore, but it was beautiful, and one of those moments where, at one point, I let my camera hang from my neck and just soaked it all in.
I wish I had been at this show all night. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t regret seeing Ho99o9 or grandson, but there was just something about TAGABOW at The Underground Music Venue that felt magical. It was one of those shows where, the second I walked in, I felt like I had just been let into the biggest and most amazing secret of all time, and that secret is this band and their sound.
Like I said, short and sweet, but now that I started writing this, I realize that I could go on and on about this band and the few songs that I caught from them, like many other shows I go to and get hit by a remarkable sense of emotion and passion, my words will never do it all justice. Unless you were there, you won’t understand the magic, so, like usual, I urge you to hit up a show. Park a couple of blocks away from your destination and pop into one of the many amazing venues your city has to offer. Seriously.
