I fell in love with Greg Wheeler And The Polly Mall Cops the first time I saw them at Cloudland a few months ago. I promise I wasn’t in love just because they were repping ZZZ Records (the record store I worked at growing up in Des Moines, Iowa) or because they hail from that very boring but important-to-me hometown. It was because of their music so when they sent over their new song “Reception,” I couldn’t wait to hit play and see if listening to this track could take me back to seeing them live.
It absolutely did that and more! Greg Wheeler And The Poly Mall Cops is a punky garage rock band with a DIY spirit and a super polished sound. You can hear all of that and more in this quick, two-minute track. I love how this band is able to put a definite groove in this song while making it a heavy-hitting, angsty anthem at the same time. There’s something super bold and commanding about this song, but at the same time, I love the attention to detail. Sure, this song just sounds like two minutes of intense chaos but if you really dig into it, you realize all of the intricacies that this trio has put into every passing beat in this track, and it’s hard not to want to listen to “Reception” on repeat to make sure that you didn’t miss a single note. It’s been a couple of months since Greg Wheeler And The Poly Mall Cops have made the trek up to Minneapolis and I know we are getting into a time of year when driving from Des Moines to Minneapolis isn’t the most fun (I’ve had my fair share of trecherous drives between these two cities over the years when it comes to winter) but I do hope they come back soon so I can hear this song and other tracks off of their new album ‘Slimephone Surveillance’ live.
