I don’t typically share holiday songs. Although it’s definitely my favorite time of the year due to the cozy nature of things (gestures to the light snow falling outside of my window right now), I know that it’s not everybody’s. I know that not everybody celebrates the same holiday and not everyone loves this season for various reasons, so I just try to avoid it, but every once in a while, a song comes out that is just too good to ignore, and “No More Caroling” from Half Built Homes is that song.

“No More Caroling” is a sarcastic song about the joys of celebrating Christmas (or any holiday) in, as the band puts it, “a capitalist wasteland.” It’s a cheery little number and definitely has those Chris Kringle kind of vibes with the sound of bells (both churchy and jingle) and the overall jangle of the track, but it’s the lyrics that really caught me. The holidays, although my favorite time of the year, definitely get difficult as I watch my bank account drain as I try to keep up with the Joneses (who happen to also be in my family, which makes it inescapable), but having this song playing on repeat this year will definitely help keep me calm and keep things in perspective. Christmas (and, again, all of the holidays this time of year) is not about gifts; it’s about family, but that always seems to get lost in the mix. Like Half Built Homes says, “HO HO HOly shit we’re screwed.”
