Girl at the Rock Shows

I briefly brought up the fact that officials are saying that the occupation of Minneapolis by masked agents is supposedly over. I say supposedly because, truthfully, I don’t believe it. As I’ve mentioned in multiple posts, neighbors and members of the Twin Cities community are still constantly being disappeared and there seems to still be an air of anxiety and fear cast over all of us. Sure, officials can say that Operation Metro Surge is coming to an end but, not only do many here not believe that, we are all left wondering what happens next. Is there going to be a new normal? Is this just the first of many waves of different things to hit the Twin Cities? Honestly, the news and the government can say what they want but things are still far from okay up here. Thankfully, this community has some amazing music including Zaq Baker who just released “victorious.” Although I still have hesitation about what comes next, this song is bringing me a sense of peace and solace.

The best part about this song, for me, isn’t the lyrics. Don’t get me wrong, the lyrics are beautiful and, truthfully, made me super emotional as I let them sink into my heart. I would list off my favorite lines of words from this song but, ultimately, I would end up listing every single line.

The best part of this song isn’t Zaq Baker’s signature instrumentation. The light piano work amplifies the perfect words and feels like an almost whimsical addition to this super impactful and powerful song.

The best thing about this song isn’t Zaq Baker’s voice. I love Zaq’s voice. It’s raw and vulnerable but it’s polished and perfect. It always has this slight hue of musical theatre behind it but you hear him mask that with sheer emotion throughout this song.

The best part of this song is the way it captures a moment in time. Zaq has perfectly encapsulated the feeling of being helpless, exhausted, burnt out, scared, anxious and every other nasty feeling we have all been feeling up here lately. It also captures the community that has kept us all going through this weird time. You feel warmth, you feel strength, you feel beauty, comfort, solace, and love. Most importantly, you feel resilience. This song makes you feel the power and the unwavering persistence that makes the Twin Cities such a beautiful place to be during such a terrifying time.

Sure, you can tell me what the news said today. You can tell me that these masked goons are leaving our beautiful state and things will get back to normal before long. I won’t believe you. I will also question what normal is anymore. It’s still feeling scary and helpless up here but, thanks to the amazing music community up here and amazing people like Zaq Baker, we will continue to fight. We will continue to protest what’s wrong. We will continue the fight.
