This is not a political blog but, over the past eighty-ish days, it’s been impossible to write posts without bringing up politics. I know the news is saying that things are back to normal here in the Twin Cities but that is far from the truth. As I keep on saying, things are still rough up here. There are still masked agents on every street and community members are still being disappeared. It causes a hopeless feeling that is so hard to not get lost in but, at the same time, it’s creating some truly meaningful music like this song from Ryan Cassata and The Taxpayers.
Although “We Don’t Fuck With Cops” isn’t specifically about what’s happening up here in Minneapolis right now, it fits. It’s an anti-cop song but anti-cop in the way where it calls out policing as a mindset, not just a job or a badge. This song reminds you to be authentic and to be your own person in the face of fascism and every other terrible ideal that cops and, more specifically to the Twin Cities, federal agents bring into communities. Ryan Cassata and The Taxpayers urge you to no give in, to fight back, and to stay strong. It’s a short song which makes the message even more poignant and perfect. As if this song wasn’t already perfect, 100% of the proceeds made off of this song are being donated to immigration defense and immigrant rights legal aid groups right here in Minnesota.
