Have you ever heard the word “Schadenfreude” before? I honestly hadn’t and had to look up the meaning of it before even digging into this song. I was wondering if that was the right or wrong choice. I love going into new music blindly and, after looking up the definition, I wondered it that would have an impact on how I hear this song from Charm School. Lucky for me, this band is so powerful that even if I hadn’t looked up the definition, it wouldn’t have been hard for me to figure out the meaning of Schadenfreude.

“Schadenfreude” mean “pleasure derived by someone from another person’s misfortune” and that’s the overall tone of this song. How can a phrase be a tone? It comes with the subtle torture and slight tension that can be heard throughout this three and a half minute long song. There’s something haunting, almost daunting about the darkness of the vocals and the juxtaposition of the dissonance that comes with the guitar and the power of everything else really forms this feeling of almost being trapped but also not necessarily hating it. Okay, maybe that’s just how I’m reading into this song and maybe you’ll take it a whole other way but, regardless, “Schadenfreude Ploy” from Charm School is the kind of song that just instantly hooks you and leaves you wanting so much more. “Schadenfreude Ploy” is the 1st single (and title track) off of the Charm School’s new album that dropped last month so, if you’re like me and feel super intrigued by this band’s unique sound and this track’s mystery, I highly suggest you check out the album as a whole.
