I’m getting a lot done today and, like usual, it feels good but my mind keeps wandering to random daydream lands. When the day started, I did my best to push the daydreams out but, at this point, I’ve given up and have let myself drift away multiple times already. I’m hoping that checking out “Ricochet” from Free Friends and Midfield will allow me to keep on getting stuff done but maybe ground me a bit more so I don’t keep drifting off.

My hope for this song was quickly dashed as, within the first few seconds of this song, I found myself daydreaming about the day that I will finally get to see Free Friends live. This song is boppy and definitely pop-punk-perfection but there’s this subtle grit behind the track that gives you the feeling of sweat dripping down your back and the smell of stale beer that can only come from your favorite live-music hosting dive bar or basement. I don’t know how Free Friends and Midfield split the difference between sweaty grit and polished perfection and I don’t know how else to explain it but “Ricochet” is the perfect example of a vibe that so many bands and acts try to pull off but ultimately fail. I know that typically I’m a lyrics lady but it wasn’t until the fourth or fifth time listening to “Ricochet” on repeat that I really let myself fall into the words. It’s not that they are bad or anything like that. In true pop-punk form, this song is raw, vulnerable and real, but it’s more that this track is just soooo good to just listen to rather than analyze so I suggest you do just that.
