Florence Dore said, upon sending “Twelve Great Minds (Department Meeting)” that this is “one of those songs where you have to laugh to keep from crying.” I think we all know that feeling. When something is just so incredibly messed up or tragic that you just have to laugh at the irony or just sheer drama of something. Maybe that’s a good thing, maybe it’s a bad thing, either way, it’s something that I do quite often so I was instantly intrigued to see how this feeling could be put into a song.
Right off the bat, I realized how this song fits the “laugh so you don’t cry” thing. The lyrics are snarky and sharp-tongued but oh so honest. I instantly realized that Florence Dore was a kindred spirit in the way that she is not afraid to say what comes to mind. The different between her and I? She does it’s with a swagger-drenched southern-flare that makes it absolutely irresistible. I’ll be the first to admit that this song is nowhere near that style that I’ve been listening to this morning. It’s definitely country-based indie-pop with a bit of an alt-rock kind of attitude which is a far cry from the screaming metal that has been radiated from my office so far this morning. That being said, the raw lyrics matched with Florence Dore’s sheer talent and heart-on-sleeve delivery of every word and note made this song feel like it had a metal edge, just without the chugging guitars and blast beats. Don’t write off this song because you don’t think the style of it is for you. This song is more than a style. It’s a statement and powerful and relatable one at that.
