Girl at the Rock Shows

Were you a mtvkid? Honestly, I was not. I didn’t have cable growing up so I really never felt attached to or felt the magic of MTV. That being said, I’m a sucker for a good music video. Sometimes, when I just need to clear my head or just need a break from the stress of life, I will go down a music video rabbithole. I’ll start with one video and follow a path to bands and videos I have never heard of so, sure, I didn’t grow up a mtvkid but I feel like, had I had the chance, I would have been one. This really has nothing to do with “Fight Back” from mtvkid outside of the band name but don’t write this song off because of this terrible intro.

“Fight Back” is a fun and energetic pop-rock song that is perfect to help get you moving on a Wednesday morning. The story behind this song is a story as old as time. It’s about the collateral damage that comes with a broken heart. I love how the lyrics of this song are super tongue-in-cheek. Don’t get me wrong, I love a song with obscure lyrics that can be interpreted a million different ways depending on how you’re feeling but it’s just as nice to have a song that’s short, sweet, and to the point like “Fight Back.” It’s not just the message and the words of this song that will hook you, it’s the energy. It’s fun, boppy, and poppy but there’s this slight sharp tongue that comes with the to-the-point styled lyrics that gives this song a little extra edge. Based in Helsinki, Finland, mtvkid is absolutely one of those bands bringing a pop leaning pop-punk sound back to the spotlight and I can not wait to hear what comes next from this group. “Fight Back” is the first song from their upcoming EP so, if you like what you hear here, make sure to throw this band a follow on their socials so you don’t miss other singles and the EP.
