There’s a storm a’brewing up here in the Twin Cities right now. You can sense it in the air, see it in the sky, and I can absolutely feel it in my head. That’s right. Although today has been a good day thus far, I’m dealing with the mumblings of a headache and I’m kind of over it. I know it’s from the weather and I’m trying my best to ignore it but it’s getting harder and harder as the storm approaches. Thankfully for me, “Golden Hills” from Erina is a headache killer. Truthfully, it’s a killer of any ailment you may have due to the sheer beauty and love that comes through loud and clear in this song.

Saying that “Golden Hills” is a beautiful and lovely song is accurate but it also doesn’t do it justice. There’s something so warm and inviting about Erina but also something so larger-than-life. It’s in her talent, it’s in her wordchoice, it’s in everything she does with her voice throughout this song. There really are no surprises in the song but there shouldn’t be. This is a solid folk anthem that will either get you lost in your own feelings or set your feelings free depending on what way you want to take it. I could tell you what this song means to me but I think it’s more important to hear straight from Erina what it’s about:

“Golden Hills is about the moment you recognize yourself in something you thought you’d never become. I initially wrote it as an observation, but making the music video (dir. by Chloe Pierson) showed me it was actually a confession; about grief, about losing my childhood sense of wonder, and about what I turned to when I couldn’t hold that loss anymore. I wrote, produced, and mixed the song myself, and that process was a cathartic reclamation of the deepest parts of my being.”

I love the fact that Erina calls this a “cathartic reclamation” while I felt it as a release of so many things. Magic is strange. It’s beautiful, it’s powerful, and every song can be interpreted a million ways. No matter how you take “Golden Hills,” one thing is for sure– you will quickly become enamored with Erina’s soul and talent.
