Girl at the Rock Shows

Finding new old songs is a favorite thing of mine. Maybe it’s a song that you heard years ago but forgot about it so, when you hear it, it takes you back to a certain moment or maybe it’s an old song from a band that you just recently fell in love with. I love the feeling of discovery whether that comes attached with a flavor of nostalgia or not. “Long Long Time” from shugE falls into that second category. This local act has been around for years but I just recently got hip to shugE so I feel like I’ve been on a never ending adventure through some old songs from them including “Long Long Time” which came out a “Long Long Time” ago.

Even though “Long Long Time” came out thirteen years ago, it feels fresh. It’s from shugE’s album ‘SORRY OK CARRY’ which, is supposedly the heaviest album in shugE’s catalogue. Whether that’s true or not, I like the heaviness that comes through in this song. Sure, it’s crunchy and grungy giving it a much heavier vibe than I’ve heard from some of shugE’s other material but it’s not heavy in the typical “metal” sense of the word. Honestly, this reminds me more of an angsty jam from a band like The Smith Street Band than a super intense and heavy track but that’s besides the point. “Long Long Time” is the kind of song that will instantly hit you right in the heart. You don’t just hear the angst that comes through loud and clear in this song, you feel it and that’s what had me listening to this song on repeat. This album was released just before shugE took a decade-long hiatus and is now being pressed with physical copies so, if you like what you hear here, I highly suggest you look into snagging a copy of this album.
