Working in a warehouse type of environment for my day job, the sound of machines is not something I would call music to my ears but that’s what drew me to Josh Evert’s new single. “South of Machines” is not something I feel would be super inviting and delightful but, after reading a bit about this Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based engineer, songwriter, composer, and producer, I had a feeling that it could change my idea of what the “Sound of Machines” should be and, hot damn, I was right.
The fourth track off of Josh Evert’s upcoming album ‘Photogenic Memory,’ I instantly fell in love. There’s something almost mechanical about this track (or maybe that’s just my interpretation of the machinery that came to mind when seeing the song title) but there’s also something so playful and slightly whimsical at the same time. Although just under three minutes long, I feel like Josh is able to create a full world in this song that will leave you wanting so much more. You can feel that this musician has so much more creativity and so many thoughts to lay out for you. Don’t believe me? Just check out this quote about “Sound of Machines”:
The first line of The Sound of Machines is literally about being woken up by construction equipment. Then realizing that I have no idea what this equipment, nor the people wielding it, could possibly be doing. This serves as the metaphor for the larger ‘machine,’ and the difficulties in raging against it without understanding it. It seems impossible without money, but of course it isn’t. So the song is riding the fence, helplessness on one side, pragmatism on the other.
You’re intrigued, right? And you want more? Me too! You’ll have to wait for a couple of months before getting more as this full album isn’t out until September but, trust me when I say, it’s worth the wait.
