Based on the title of this song, it’s easy to assume that “Better by Myself” from Jim Cesare is a post-break-up kind of song. That’s fine, but definitely not what I’m in the mood for on this Monday morning. I want something upbeat. Something to get me into work mode for the week and kick me in the ass a bit to make sure it’s a motivated Monday rather than a manic one. That being said, my gut said that this was the song I needed this morning and, like usual, my gut was dead on.

As suspected, this song absolutely is a post-breakup song, but there’s so much more to it. I wouldn’t call this the most positive and upbeat jam you’ll hear all day, but the infectious energy of the beat mixed with Jim Cesare’s smooth yet emotive vocals creates a world that is so easy to get lost in, but also one that allows you space to drift away from life in a way. Stylistically, this song is a little pop-punk but with a little alt-rock kind of twist. Think ‘Tickets to My Downfall’ from MGK, but with a bit more heart while feeling a bit more bare bones. I think I like this song because it isn’t overly produced. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but that gives it charm and really drives the energy and passion that Jim Cesare has straight into your heart, which is where it belongs.
