How is it already 10:30 in the morning? I’ve been at work for four hours and, although I’ve gotten a lot done, I feel like it’s not even close to enough. I keep on getting distracted by things, and it’s one of those days when I feel like getting caught up on emails is just not in the cards. I’m trying to be okay with it, but I’ll be honest, it’s hard to come to terms with it. Should I be reviewing another single right now rather than attending to said inbox? Probably not, but my gut is telling me that “Shallow Shores” from The Crooked Stuff is what I need right now.
“Shallow Shores” is quirky and energized synth-rock perfection. Right off the bat, I want to relate this a bit to The Faint meets Breathe Carolina. It has the severity of intensity of a song from The Faint, but there’s this playful energy that makes this song nothing short of infectious, which reminds me a bit more of Breathe Carolina. Neither of these comparisons is perfect, but when it comes to a band like Crooked Stuff, I don’t think there is a perfect comparison. This is a band that is dancing to their own sound and creating their own world one song at a time.
I could sit here all day and try to describe this song to you but I have got a little insight from Tom Gorton (a member of The Crooked Stuff) and feel like seeing into his thoughts on this song will really help so….
“Shallow Shores is a gritty synth and lyrical rip through the high-bandwidth shit that’s flooding the world these days. At the intersection of human flaws, ill intent, and mass media, the mire comes down to simply corrupt actors who have a huge and caustic impact. Sonically it’s deceptively simple, built on an 8-bit, video-game-style synth line played on our Moog Little Phatty riding on top of a classic boom-bap cracking beat. Lyrically it’s a rapid, bouncing dash through the toxic keywords of a destabilized time. Visually, I wanted a huge industrial space that could let the sonic density blast out while still feeling empty, isolated, even helpless. It’s shallow shores out there, people, beware!”
Take my words to heart, take Tom’s words to heart or ignore us both. All I ask is that you check out “Shallow Shores” from The Crooked Stuff.
