I just bought a new computer. I should be super stoked about it, and I am, but seeing that much money leave my bank account was a hard pill to swallow. I needed it. With a few trips to cover shows and festivals in the near future, I didn’t want to travel with two separate computers like I had been doing. It was the right purchase and one that needed to be done, but holy heck, I feel as drained as my bank account right now. I can’t dwell on it, so instead of trying to figure out where that money is going to come from and how I’m going to get back on track, let’s just dive into another new song.
downcast mentioned in their pitch to me with this song that this is one of the most deeply personal songs they have ever released. They didn’t have to tell me that, I felt that within the first few seconds of this song. This isn’t a light-hearted track like I think my heart wanted right now, but it is a deep one that made me feel worlds of pain, sobriety, and catharsis all at once. There’s frustration, anger, and angst throughout this song, but that seems to be overshadowed by the sheer emotion you can feel with every passing note and word. I love how this song is heavy, with overbearing instrumentation, but it never takes away from the words, which are the star of the song. I’m not the one who is going to tell you what this song is about. It’s so personal that it doesn’t feel right to even paraphrase, so here’s what frontman Liam Edwards says about this song: “‘falling to pieces’ is about my little brother who passed away last September at the age of twenty-eight. He struggled with severe alcohol addiction for a long time, which eventually caused fatal medical complications. The song was written during a time of confusion, before we understood exactly what took him from us. All I knew was that nothing could change what had happened. The song captures the anger and frustration I carried while learning to accept this.” I warned you: heavy, but breathtakingly beautiful and absolutely worth a listen today.
