Girl at the Rock Shows

There are a bunch of shows happening tonight that I would love to be at, but unfortunately, my body is telling me that the only show I’ll be watching is the steam pouring out of the shower and into my face. That’s right, I’m sick. Too sick to even show, which, if you know me, you know means I’m pretty dang sick. Although I’m bummed to be missing bands like Terror and Wu-Tang Clan tonight, I’m not going to spend my evening in bummertown. Instead, I’m going to fill it with new music and pretend like I’m at a show, exploring new worlds, so let’s start by hopping into moberod’s world by checking out his new EP, ‘All Over You’.

This five-song EP kicks off with “Get Her Home.” Right off the bat, moberod places you in an almost eerie world, which makes sense since this album is a bit about obsession, among other things. This haunting track tells the story of being left alone when you need someone most. Due to my most current TV binge of some more disturbing documentaries, my mind instantly went into the world of a serial killer. I’m not at all saying that moberod is a serial killer or that that’s even what this song is about, but that’s where I went with it, and it just added a haze of sinister energy around this song. “Get Her Home” isn’t an exceptionally bright song by any means, but it’s also not super dark. It’s catchy and has a hook that comes through loud and clear, but there’s something eerie about this track that made me excited to see what happens next in the storyline of ‘All Over You.’

As “You’re So Dumb (For Loving Me)” kicked in, I realized that this album is definitely not a concept album. Although all of the songs revolve around some of the same themes like obsession, self-sabotage, and the mess that comes with love, this second song made it clear that these five songs are going to be all over the place. “You’re So Dumb (For Loving Me)” attacks the idea of self-sabotage head-on. It’s a fun, pop-punky song full of smiles and moments to jump along to, with tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Although there’s definitely hilarity behind the words, there is also honesty, and I love that about this track because, although it’s super fun, it may make you look back on past relationships and realize how silly it was that you even tried to make them work.

“Twisting The Knife” is the third song on this EP and, again, moberod changes the vibe completely with this song. There’s a campy country edge to this song that instantly caught my ear. I know I said campy, and that may make you feel like this song is a bit of a joke, but I promise it’s not. The overall vibe change made me laugh and caught me off guard, but moberod really pulls it off nicely as he sings about staying too long in a bad relationship and just “Twisting The Knife” instead of just walking away, with the perfect amount of outlaw country twang.

moberod maybe should have listened to the lyrics of “Twisting The Knife” a bit closer, as “Escape GOAT”, the fourth song on this album, is about staying even after you knew that you shouldn’t. This song has a slightly darker tone, which makes sense given the subject matter, but it also has some of the catchiness I felt in “You’re So Dumb (For Loving Me).” It’s a unique song that, at times, feels like it belongs in the background of a True Blood episode but, at other times, has an almost grunge kind of tone to it that makes you want to start a one-woman mosh pit with your cats. Like everything moberod seems to do, “Escape GOAT” keeps you on your toes throughout the four and a half minutes that it lasts.

‘All Over You’ closes out with “A Perfect Stranger.” This song seems to bring everything back full circle to “Get Her Home” as it’s a song about, as moberod puts it, “lust, deception, abandonment, and identity loss. It’s about becoming someone unrecognizable while trying to hold on to something that was already gone.” Naturally, a song about such a deep and dark topic will have a bit more eeriness to it, but I love how moberod matches that eeriness with the perfect amount of grit and power, making this song the perfect exclamation point on ‘All Over You.’

TL; DR – There’s really nothing new being done on ‘All Over You,’ but don’t let that stop you from checking it out. moberod is a true talent. From his songwriting to his compositions, this musician has something unique to say and a very cool way of saying it. If you don’t like a particular song, move on to the next and, within the five songs of this EP, you will surely find something you do like. It’s all over the place, with the one constant being moberod’s talent and creativity.
